Rustbuster’s R10/B1 Resin Remover
This week, we were asked to verify the effectiveness of our R10/B1 resin remover. It seemed like an unusual request, but we decided to test it again to ensure the results were as expected.
Rustbuster R10/B1 has replaced the AS10 resin remover. It is a Benzyl Alcohol Formic Acid solution, which has been developed as a safer alternative to Dichloromethane (DCM). Concerns about the health effects of DCM have driven the search for alternatives across many of its applications. On 15th March 2019, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a final rule banning the manufacture (including import and export), processing, and distribution of DCM in all paint removers intended for consumer use, with the ban taking effect 180 days later.
So, is Rustbuster R10/B1 effective?
In short, yes!
We have tested this product on various coatings, including EM121 Epoxy Mastic and Slosh Fuel Tank Sealer, among others. Below are some images showing the results. The test panel was painted to a thickness of 150-175 microns over ten days ago and then coated with the resin remover.
Chris’s Top Tip: When stripping old coatings chemically, particularly in cooler weather, it’s essential to prevent the stripper from drying out. Work in a cool environment, and once the paint stripper or resin remover has been applied, cover it with cling film. If necessary, dampen a tea towel and place it over the top.
