Donated clothing is helping schoolgirls in Africa thanks to Barnstaple Soroptimists

17-03-2015

A SECOND load of donated clothing has been collected for recycling as part of a Barnstaple campaign to help keep girls in school in Africa. Members of Soroptimist International of Barnstaple have had a great response to their appeal Knickers for Knowledge. The money they raise from selling the donated clothing will be used to provide underwear and sanitary protection for schoolgirls in Zimbabwe. Only 60% of girls attend secondary school worldwide and that number drops to a quarter in many parts of Africa as the lack of sanitary protection and underwear provides barriers to education. Soroptimist member Irene Hockin said: "Our project, Knickers for Knowledge, is going great guns. People are always glad to get rid of things. We have had people hanging on to past relatives' stuff for years and suddenly they have found a good project to give it to and have had a good clear out." The latest collection, comprising 1,600 kilograms of textiles, was picked up by Bag 2 The Future which gives 50 pence per kilo for donated goods. The two collections have raised a total of £1,240 for the appeal. The Barnstaple club has also received funds for the project through donations and the sale of lottery tickets. It is working with its Friendship Link Club, Soroptimist International of Bulawayo, to use the money to the best effect. They will also be learning more about the projects their sister group has and will be working with them towards a long term plan. A collection point for donations has been set up at William C Hockin (Transport) Ltd, Gratton Way, Roundswell Industrial Estate, Barnstaple.
