Stricter emission limits for petrol and diesel engines from 1 January 2019

Following the reintroduction of the tailpipe test, the second step in the improvement of emissions monitoring will be from 1 January 2019, when stricter exhaust emission limits will come into force after the obligatory tailpipe measurement has been reintroduced on all AU compulsory vehicles. Workshops should take this into account when purchasing their test equipment.
Haldenwang, December 12, 2018. Under the AU Directive, the permissible limits for Euro 6 / VI vehicles will be significantly reduced on 1 January 2019. From then on, the maximum turbidity value of the exhaust gas in diesel vehicles is reduced from k value 0.5 1 / m to 0.25 1 / m and the minimum regulation speed at which the exhaust gas measurement is carried out is set to 90% of the rated speed. For Euro 6 / VI petrol engines, the measured CO content in the tailpipe must not exceed 0.1% vol.
Due to the accuracy classes prescribed by the regulatory authority for AU devices, an error limit of only 0.1m-1 maximum is prescribed from this point in time. At the latest, garages therefore require exhaust gas measuring instruments that provide the necessary precision to clearly determine the more stringent emission values of these vehicles. Workshops that already use the MET series from MAHA are definitely on the safe side with regard to the new requirements and are able to carry out exhaust gas measurements - even on the most recent vehicle generations - in accordance with the law.
However, what further requirements will come into effect in the third step on 1 January 2021 for the periodic emission test for Euro 6 / VI diesel vehicles is still hotly debated by experts and the regulator. The fact is that at the present time no detailed information regarding the particle number measurement and the required measuring methods has been made. The manufacturers are already in the starting blocks, but can not yet complete adjustments to existing exhaust gas measuring devices or new product developments because of this - so far no approved device is available on the German market.
"Of course, at MAHA, we are constantly further developing our products and making improvements," says Daniel Mohr, Product Manager for Emissions Measurement Technology at MAHA. "As soon as specific specifications and specifications that will apply from 1 January 2021 are defined, we will, of course, expand our portfolio accordingly. The preparations for this are already in full swing, but we depend on information from the legislation in order to steer the development in the right direction. The fact is that the time until this final decision will ultimately be lacking manufacturers for the implementation of the new requirements. "
Fortunately, thanks to the extensive know-how of experienced experts and short decision-making channels, MAHA is able to respond quickly and effectively to new requirements. The first prototype, which is suitable for particle counting of Euro 6 / VI diesel vehicles, is therefore expected to be available in autumn 2019. Until the entry into force in 2021, the workshops will still have enough time to purchase additional measuring equipment and technology, or to supplement special modules for existing equipment.
