WHAT WILL THE DIESEL AND PETROL BAN MEAN FOR YOU?

06-04-2023

The government has announced plans to bring the ban on the sale of new diesel and petrol vehicles forward to 2035. What’s more, hybrid cars have now been included in the ban for the first time. The RAC answered some of the most pressing questions drivers may have about the proposed changes to the ban, including explaining why hybrid vehicles have been included in the ban for the first time. According to the motoring organisation, this is because if owners don’t regularly charge their hybrid vehicles, they can be just as polluting as petrol and diesel vehicles. In a report by the Science and Technology Committee in August last year, it was suggested that a 2040 ban on petrol and diesel vehicles was too late to help the UK achieve its target of net-zero emissions by 2050. Although you won’t be able to buy new petrol or diesel cars from this date, you will still be able to purchase second-hand vehicles that run using combustion engines. That means that if you have a diesel or petrol vehicle, you won’t be forced to scrap it. However, transport secretary Grant Shapps told BBC radio earlier this month that it’s possible the ban could be introduced even sooner, in 2032, depending on the outcome of the consultation it launched into bringing the date forward. Whatever vehicle you drive, you’ll want to make sure it’s operating as efficiently as possible. Investing in Vauxhall remapping, or remapping for whatever car you drive, could help to achieve that.
