Freight industry figures discuss Brexit implications with key minister

A flourishing logistics industry and ensuring Britain’s ability to deliver goods on time is maintained will be key to the UK’s success post-Brexit. That’s the view of David Jones – Tory MP for Clwyd West and the Minister for the Department for Exiting the European Union. Speaking at the ‘Keep Britain Trading’ conference, hosted by the Freight Transport Association (FTA), Mr Jones stressed that establishing solid global trading relationships was a cornerstone of the government’s vision for a stronger, more successful Britain outside of the EU. He added that the health of the nation’s logistics industry would play a big role in achieving frictionless cross-border trade and convincing Britain’s trading partners that the UK would still be open for business post-Brexit. James Hookham, deputy chief executive of the FTA, said Mr Jones’ attendance at the one-day conference helped its delegates from across the freight sector debate and examine the implications of leaving the EU for their businesses. “The UK’s prosperity has been established on long-term trading partnerships and it is important that effective, efficient logistics remain in place to assist in maintaining the country’s position as a global leader in free trade,” Mr Hookham commented. “Strong international relationships will be vital both inside and outside the EU as a post-Brexit Britain moves forwards. Our members will welcome the minister’s commitment to achieving a phased process of implementation for any changes in trading arrangements, which will keep Britain trading.” The event, held at London’s Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, was attended by more than 150 representatives of the UK’s freight and logistics industry, including air, sea and road freight operators.
