Introduction to Cold Galvanising Primers Cold galvanising primers, such as Rustbuster Cold Galvanising Paint, are highly effective solutions for protecting steel surfaces from corrosion. These one-component epoxy primers contain high zinc content, often around 90%, which offers superior anti-corrosive protection. These primers are especially useful for repairing two-component zinc epoxy and zinc silicate coatings, making them an essential tool in maintenance and restoration projects. How Cold Galvanising Primers Work When applied to properly prepared steel, the high zinc content acts as a sacrificial anode. This means the zinc corrodes in place of the steel, providing ongoing protection. For example, if the paint scratches or chips down to the steel surface, the surrounding paint reactivates and corrodes sacrificially, protecting the exposed steel from rust and degradation. Coverage 10 m2 per litre. Application temperature Can be applied to steel as low as -5c. The steel must be at least 3 degrees above the current dew point. (See our dew point calculator.) Application Brush or spray. Spraying Nozzle orifice: 1.5-3.0mm Nozzle pressure: 0.2-0.3 MPa (approx. 2-3 bar, 29-44PSI). The product can be thinned up to 25% with Cold Galvanising Thinner. Shelf life We recommend storing upside down in a dry place at around 20c. In these conditions, the product has a shelf life of 9 months. Do not store below 20c as this can affect performance. Cleaning Clean up with Cold Galvanising Thinner. Safety Use in a well-ventilated atmosphere. Use a respirator face mask when spraying or brushing in an enclosed space.
