Greenwave

30-11-2017

The GreenWave Project is a collaborative partnership involving Idox Transport, Checkedsafe, Amey and Birmingham City Council. The project has secured funding from the UK’s Innovation agency Innovate UK, to help reduce highway maintenance fleet emissions around the city of Birmingham and improve fuel efficiency. If successful, it is envisaged the project will be implemented nationwide. Large commercial vehicles burn significant amounts of extra fuel when idling at traffic lights and also emit increased emissions. The aim of the Greenwave project is to use the data from the UTC (Urban Traffic Control) system and feed that information back to a driver via an App on a smartphone to inform the driver when the lights are about to change so the driver can adjust their driving style accordingly. In this way, if drivers can keep moving through green lights and “ride the Greenwave” rather than idling, they will save approximately 10-15% on fuel and reduce emissions. The project is understood to be the first of its kind using an App to provide data to drivers in a city centre. Greenwave is a “12 month” project to test the viability of “riding the Greenwave”.
